[ When everyone tries to cross the bridge to the northern area, whether it's because they wanted to check something out really quickly or left something there or some other convenient excuse, they will find that they're probably not where they were expecting.
Instead of the town, they're inside what is probably a castle. It's definitely not the pink one though? In fact, it's a little odd, in the sense that it's definitely styled to be an olde castle of an older time period, but it has some modern amenities, light the overhead lights and modern tile flooring. They're inside right at the front entrance, and if they look behind them the exit doors are wide open, but there's a barrier that's blocking them from walking out. The scenery outside also doesn't match the northern area--it's mostly just unfamiliar fields and mountains.
If they look ahead of them, it's a long hallway that eventually ends at another doorway. In front of the door are four podiums, each with a card on it. The cards read:
THE LIBRARIAN THE HANDMAIDEN THE AIDE THE JESTER
They will all have all understand, for some reason, that they are each meant to take a card and then step through the door. ]
[ This is slightly alarming, but Jeanne understands soon enough this is one of those adventures that always end in injuries or a 10 year stare into an abyss. ]
Please do not. I will take it, if no one else wishes to.
[ As they pass through the door, they will see that all of their clothing has magically changed to reflect their new profession. "Francy what does that mean what does an aide look like" it is almost midnight I will search for visual representations later.
When they look at their cards, they will also find that there's now writing on the back of them. They each read: ]
THE LIBRARIAN You have been caring for the royal library for years. You know more about the happenings of the castle than you let on, but most people don't actually notice that you're there. You clean up the messes no one else sees.
THE HANDMAIDEN You did not want this job, but due to unfortunate circumstances, you now work as the king's handmaiden, although it really feels like you're more of a maid than anything. You have to quickly respond to the king's demands and keep them taken care of.
THE AIDE You are the right hand of the king. You help them with their day to day items, and try to keep them happy so that they might not accidentally start a war. Again. While some may not trust your intentions, it does not phase you.
THE JESTER You must keep the king happy. The king's level of entertainment revolves around you, and if you do not keep the king content, then their mood will worsen. Do not let this happen. The kingdom is at stake.
[ Going forward, they will see that this room has two doors. One to the left, and one to the right. They will know that they must split up here. If they try to stick together as a large group, they will not be able to advance.
Choose who is going left and who is going right. ]
[ When Lup and Alphinaud step through the left door, they will find themselves in a bustling kitchen. Cooks are running back and forth frantically, yelling orders at each other, as they rush to prepare their various dishes. A few of them cast curious looks at the pair, but they don't stop.
Somehow, the two will know that there is a feast tonight. How do they know this? Obviously because they work at the castle? Duh. You guys picked roles. However, that's all the information they seem to have about it all.
One of the cooks, who looks more in charge than the others, walks to them. ]
[ Alphinaud discreetly bumps her with his elbow, shooting her a quick narrow-eyed glance. ]
—Ahem. What she means is that she is come to see how the preparations are coming along! 'Twould be best to check in sooner rather than later in case of any problems that should arise, yes? We trust that there are none, however!
[ The cook looks between them, frowning. He is obviously one of those cooks that is very controlling about his kitchen... but it seems like saying the king's name made him not say something rude in response.
Can't complain about a boss who can behead you. ]
... they're going fine. I heard there's more guests added to the lists now. What are we supposed to add to the menu for them?
[ oh my god you really gave them the kitchen option, she - this is terrible, this poor cook. ]
What do you have so far? Because if you don't have garlic crusted crown roast of pork with onion and bread crumb stuffing, what are you doing? Caramelized onion and gruyere mashed potatoes? Roasted brussel sprouts with goat cheese and butter?
[ When Clementine and Jeanne walk through the right door, they will find themselves... well, outside? Who designed this. But they walk out to what seems to be an area with stables. Workers are walking around, chatting to each other.
While they can see some other buildings around, the stables are what's closest to them. No one is paying them any mind yet. ]
[ well then, before they head towards the stables since that's what's closest - can she hear what the workers are saying? what are they talkin' about... ]
[ The topic of conversation seems to be a big feast that's being held later tonight. Somehow, Clementine and Jeanne will not be surprised by there being a feast, as if this is something they should just know.
But they're mostly focused on whether or not it will go as badly as the last time there was an event like this... apparently it did not go well.
At the stables, Jeanne will notice some very top quality horses. Some workers are setting them up... it looks like someone is going to be going on a ride? ]
[ The king continues to walk with them, her expression souring every time Clementine says anything. She really was the worst person to get the jester job, and yet, here we are. ]
It's not like you actually care about what happens here. But that's fine.
[ She looks forward, and that's when Lup and Alphinaud stumble in.
As they walk, the symbols on the ground all start to glow softly, their white color changing to something more gaudy--green, pink, colors that are kind of terrible to look at for too long? But once the five of them are all together, the king speaks again, placing her hands on her hips. ]
[ lup asks, tiredly. she nods a sup at clementine. lup's just covered in blood and also has a knife sticking out of her side? and she's carrying alphinaud.
she's so tired. she wobbles a bit, but manages to stay standing. ] We ran into a lady with a knife problem.
ONCE UPON A TIME...

A king, huh. [ :unamused: ] I guess I'll go... left? Which is the less terrible option.

From what we've seen, they probably both suck. I'll go right.

Alphinaud?! What happened? Ruby?
[ Her alarm and concern skyrockets. This is terrible.
is jeanne one to talk when she got thrown into a tree or a tree got thrown at her three times? it's fine ]
I fear we must be prepared. If you can't fight, please stay behind me.
[ Jeanne will be fine. It will be fine. ]
