The Realm... It responds based on people's experiences and memories. Most likely, what happened was that it knew such a contraption was used to execute criminals, based off people's knowledge, and thus it chose what it thought was sensible.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was random. Or maybe, since she and Virid seemed to know each other, it just knew to associate her with him, without considering the context.

It's the nature of human empathy to hurt when others hurt. So, I wouldn't say you aren't suffering, if you feel any grief over what happened.
