I think Ange was basically someone Clem babyzoned immediately. Like Mob, it was very little to do with age and everything to do with personality. Or, uh. PERCIEVED PERSONALITY lmfao. I think probably the persistence of "ANGE/CLEM REAL" in chat made us both go HAHA [ sweats ] in the same way but for very different reasons. For me it was because Clem really did not have dokis for Ange at all... She just liked her a lot, platonically. She was babyzoned. Clem likes goofy boys and tough girls - and in general: people who can take care of themselves. She didn't realize Ange was someone like that until too late for it to be Anything LOL.
Clementine learned quick that she couldn't judge people based on the scale of her own world, since other people were from different situations so... Why would they know how to handle her shit and be as hardened as she is? So she just thought Ange was sweet. And she probably wouldn't have thought much of her, because while Ange (seemed to Clem) like a sincere person, and Clem values that sincerity - she doesn't quite know how to get along with soft nice girls. Except for that they had that weekly effect drawing them to each other, so... She spent time with her, anyway! And it was really NICE!! Ange was just so!! Nice!!!! Clem couldn't wrap her head around it. She'd had a couple 'nice' people that she'd chatted with already, like Ochako and Mob and Alphinaud, but Ange was just on a whole other level of being so eager to comfort her and reassure her.
Which probably should have been a red flag, for how much it stood out to Clem? But she just went "WOW pretty fucked up of this place to bring Ange here." And she also never knew anything about murders because she didn't. Really try that hard to solve them because it wasn't her friends dying - and by the time it was, she was already in with the roles and teams and kind of helping to orchestrate things to begin with.
I've mentioned this a lot, but Clem's relationships back home almost ALL go from Step 1) Be hostile, size each other up, threaten each other, tough talk etc... To Step 2) Apologize, be sincere. And then like immediately to Step 3) Die/Kill For Each Other After That One Honest Conversation. With most people here being genuinely nice and honest, Clem just skipped step 1. Which was weird, but alright. And she assumed that was the case with Ange, too.
She didn't really have anything (again, as far as she knew) in common with Ange, but Ange knew about AJ, and was sweet, and so Clem had a big soft spot for her and wanted to protect her and do things to make her happy! This also meant keeping her far the fuck away from any information Clem had and any role stuff. But like - she was trying to cheer Sora up by kind of joking about who to use romance RSVPs on, and when Ange came up they were both just like "Well it would have to be someone REALLY GOOD because Ange deserves ONLY THE BEST"
The week Jeanne was protected was a week that Clem started with like... A huge up-swing about having the role group to orchestrate with, and having all the Rabbits listen to her about who to vote for. and there was sad stuff to kick off the down-swing, but also they DID SAVE JEANNE, and she was like. THAT'S what I'm holding onto. We protected who we tried to protect and we're making progress and I'm not totally helpless! But then immediately was: but now I have to sacrifice my friends and let some Rabbits die. And she was just like. Holding on very dearly to: OKAY, but only the people who splinter and the people who volunteered are going to die. We're going to protect as many people as we can. We're going to save someone again this week.
And then? Ange killed Dorothy, who they had protected???? And Clem was like I see. Time to perish. She was so. Fucked up over that. Her next couple pcs were just her like. laying face down on a bed continuously groaning. And HONESTLY I THINK she was so stressed about sacrificing Rabbits and Dorothy dying despite her being protected being like Her One Hope Spot That Week that she just fucking. Barely even registered the shift in Ange. She couldn't even ruminate on it. She was just like "Oh, okay. Fuck me, I guess!!!"
Because while Clem's relationships go from that 1st stage of lying into sincerity and then right into pure trust as if the initial hostility and deception had never happened... She's used to those stages happening MUCH FASTER. Clem is absolutely used to people lying to her, even attacking her first thing, and almost immediately forgiving and forgetting. But it's usually like. A couple days tops. This was WEEKS of being lied to. And she GETS it? She doesn't think "Oh, Ange is terrible, what a horrible person, she should have told me the truth." She just doesn't have any interest in getting to know the real Ange yet because she had too much else going on to focus on, and enough other good friendships that it just wasn't a priority to her.
At the time of the reveal, she just felt... Done. Like, oh. Okay. Well now I know, goodbye forever. No hard feelings but also No Feelings At All, Goodbye.
I do think that in time she would probably warm up to getting to know the real Ange, and with more distance from all the Stress she was under, she's definitely disappointed that she wasted her time getting to Not Even Know someone and caring about a fake personality. Right now, you know, it's like a lie has been 90% of their time together. But if they spent more time together and that percentage decreased, I think she would eventually let it go. She doesn't hold grudges quite like that. But I don't think she would be the one to reach out, either.
