Honestly, Chiron liked Alex from their first meeting. He’d been expecting a lot more pushback to his form, and while she was indeed shocked by the HORSE, she was more irritated that he hadn’t been given suitable living quarters. It was just one of those small gestures that he wouldn't expect from a human, and that extension of kindness really stuck in his mind.
But of course the moment Alex earned his respect as someone worthy of his time and efforts was absolutely when he dared her to stand up to him, and she did.
Because Chiron is very kind and sweet and open to protecting/guiding everyone, but he’s also a very hard sell, he’s a warrior at his core. There’s a reason he refused to tell most people his team, even his closer CR, and given that he went into this murdergame treating it like a Holy Grail War, he had no issues demanding that others rise to the occasion. From his angle, it was a test to see if Alex would follow through with her convictions, and – Well.
The girl straight up threatened him. Which fuckin delighted him. The fact that they were both trying to protect the same person made it all the more iconic to him, and is really when he started taking her company to heart.
Though I don’t think he truly recognized how much Alex mattered to him, and him to her, until he nearly scapegoated himself. There were plenty of complications to that night, but Alex slapping him and then crying on his shoulder was a wake-up call for certain. It’s not even that Chiron would have done things differently – but he would have at least considered how cruel of a wound he was leaving behind, and thus done more to either comfort her or make his plans known.
He’s stupid that way, sometimes; it’s not that he can’t see other people care for him, but his nature/personality means he’s ready to take the hard road and leave others behind. As a teacher, his life is already filled with bittersweet partings. If he has one significant flaw, it’s underselling the importance of his memory in the eyes of others.
So even if the OT4 hadn’t happened, that night would have ensured that Chiron would have been more honest with her, and more overtly caring – kinda as a penance for all the stress he put her through. But uh, the OT4 absolutely backhanded all of us, so Chiron instead got to know Alex more on a personal level. While his interests have remained mostly platonic, I’d say of the four, Alex is the one who has ended up his greatest emotional anchor. No matter that he kept losing memories and his sense of self, she never faltered in looking after him, and as the weeks went on, he found himself relying on her for guidance and comfort, much in the way she sought him out during those earlier weeks.
And now that his memories are back and they’re going to be living together for the foreseeable future, he’s just content and happy that she’s a part of this group of people he loves.
