/SLAMS THIS SUCKER DOWN, YES IT WAS ALREADY WRITTEN UP
I joked so much about Chiron adopting half of this game, but I did not expect it to be so literal in some cases.
Lup is… jesus, she was a whirlwind of sass and delight from day one, one of the few who could so thoroughly confuse Chiron, but still be so heartfelt and joyous? Being around her was akin to a firefly dancing around the sun, and he really fell in love with how lively she could be. It was like a constant reminder of what he had forsaken for duty – the joy of being alive with someone else at the same time.
Which is a big reason why her happiness turned into one of his primary concerns throughout the game. His relationship with Emet, while occasionally romantic, was still rooted in pragmatics for him – if he had to die, he knew that Emet would let him. But Lup was very open and firm about her own wishes, that she was tired of losing people and wanted Chiron to live not for himself, but because she loved him and wanted him to continue existing. So all of those times Chiron was preparing himself for a potential death -- whenever he was plotting and moving himself like a chess piece that would soon be scooted off the board, he would remember Lup and just feel this sting of guilt that followed him like a rain cloud.
Maybe should couldn’t stop him from yeeting himself into death, but that she could make him pause at all, and really consider if it was worth leaving people behind… The amount of sway and power she had over Chiron was delightful, to be honest.
It’s why when he was chosen to die, Chiron honestly grieved for his own life. Because he wanted to live, and he wanted to be with Lup, and he didn’t want to imagine a world where she was crying over him. He felt as if he’d failed her, and the best he could manage was encouraging others like Blanca and Sora to look after her while he was dead.
-- AND THEN IT TURNS OUT SHE KNEW DAMN WELL HE WAS GOING TO DIE but honestly, that did not change his opinion in the slightest. She went to bat for him pretty much every week up until the end, when they all knew someone had to die -- and those decisions were made with the intent of bring the dead back to life anyway. So it didn't hurt him, he didn't feel betrayed; the only thing he felt was sadness that he left her anyway, and she had to let it happen.
Now that he’s alive, Chiron is determined to put more value into his own life – not as a Heroic Spirit that might be called to put down his life for the sake of the world/universe, or as a myth that’s been shared throughout history to the point his life isn’t necessarily his anymore -- but as an individual person with his own wants and needs. He wants to spend some of that time with her, partly as a thank you for helping to guide him, but also because he just. wants to be beside her.
