OKAY SO. SO!!!! kano was literally one of those people that sora never quite figured out how to handle but the thing about kano is that he really, really wanted to try. sora's surrounded by so many goddamn weirdos in the kh series that he's just learned how to talk to people as he goes and it's a lot of why he mostly let kano be himself and didn't try to push him once he realized that kano was the type of person who wouldn't cooperate if pushed. hilariously, actually, kano reminds him a little of roxas who is also pretty much someone who looks at situations and goes "haha fuck this" and ventures off to do whatever he wants to do without really telling people exactly what he's thinking.
kano really drew his attention solely for the fact that he was SO bizarre when he and sora first met, including the delivery of a severed arm. sora is someone who loves people who are different than he is because at the end of the day yeah he is sociable, he likes talking to people and getting to know them and overall he wants to know how to help his friends with anything they need, no matter how great or small. he was never sure if kano actually ever wanted his help, but he was willing to give it to him no matter what. it's also why he went to see him after the trial kano was scapegoated and they had the conversation they had. he trusted that kano had his reasons for doing things and wanted to fulfill anything else he could do in the time allowed since kano would be leaving.
admittedly he was surprised kano wrote to him but kano also knew how to play on his weaknesses really well because the assessment he had of him was right. sora would immediately share letters and crowdsource and try to find answers. he was actually pretty thrilled that kano chose to try to help and pass the message along because it really solidified that kano isn't a bad person. kano was someone who had his own way of doing things and his own morals but he was a person who sora could still trust at the end of the day. he never wanted to have that trust waver and it's why he dutifully delivered all of the messages, wrote to him to ask questions, etc.
he's not under any illusion that kano trusts him as much as he trusts kano, but he does see him as a friend and would still drop everything to lend him a hand or just hang out with him and it's a very weird kind of friendship that he doesn't regret
