GOD DAUGHTER THOUGH or - idk, it's a mix of daughter/little sister thing with clementine because clementine is such a mix of Independent Child and Please Hug Me.
one of the first threads they had was lup feeding clementine and like, it was - clem being like "oh, yeah, i ate multiple times today!!" all excitedly, and that absolutely broke lup's heart. she'd been all set to be distant, but like. her own childhood with taako was, i imagine, fraught with periods of time where they couldn't afford food. she has definitely gone hungry before and seeing someone who is about the age she was when her and taako struck out on their own be that genuinely excited about basic necessities got lup in a way she wasn't expecting. so clem had an advantage there from the start, because lup had already almost unconsciously decided that clementine was going to be someone she was going to feed whenever she got the chance.
i think there were a lot of times where clementine would say something and lup would just kind of be like, oofa doofa, this child can hold so much trauma in her. like - lup is not what i'd call an optimistic person, but she is Very sure of herself. she knows what she is capable of, what she wants to accomplish, and how she's going to accomplish it. and that sort of stubbornness was reflected in clem sometimes, i think, where clem was like i know what i'm about, i know what life is like for me but the difference was clem was more like "i don't have any faith that it's going to change" for good reason because twd world sucks ass. lup is used to being able to change things because her magic really affords her a lot of freedom. so she got frustrated a few times because she'd try to do something to give clementine hope, and clem would just be like no and... lup couldn't really blame her for it. what do you say to a girl who lives in a world like that? what do you say to a girl who grew UP in a world like that? clem's experience was so much different than lup's and lup never quite figured out how to navigate the line between protag speech and realism with her, i think.
the thread where they memshared was really good for the general relationship they had i think, where it was a lot of "wow that sucks" and lup trying to give a little bit of hope but not wanting to overstep. lup knowing about aj was also something else, too, because - you mentioned it in your tl;cr but they both had their Heart. it was a similar enough emotion that lup saw him and basically was like oh, i see, this is the type of love that you'd die for. she was a little sad that clem is young and has to deal with raising a kid, but... lup and taako basically raised themselves, so that's a similar experience. she got it, connected with that. and it was nice to see it in other people, especially since taako had forgotten her that week.
so that kind of had lup never really thinking about clementine as a KID necessarily? i think she spent most of the game forgetting that clementine is still young, which a lot of people did too. there were a lot of times that lup reached out for hugs or hair ruffles or stuff like that because she wanted them? because she wanted comfort from clementine, and it just so happened to work out for both of them, haha. i think that's why lup never really thought of herself as being a good Maternal Figure because she'd have her moments and then turn around and be like yes, you teenage girl, hug ME because I feel bad, not the other way around skdfjks
BUT THEN THE ROLE STUFF lup genuinely thought that clementine was being like "well, i'm useless now" which is funny because lup was also doing that but not entirely seriously. it was like 75% joking around and the rest was serious bc lup always expects to be tossed aside. it doesn't bother her most of the time - it's kind of just what happens when you spend 1 year in 1 world for a 100 years; you stop caring as much because you can't. you can't get attached. but she always does anyway, and she was VERY attached to her roles, and she was convinced for a bit that they were going to be like okay, time for lup to go now that she's served her purpose. it's stupid because she literally had no reason to think this, and the entire role group was like you dumbass, stop.
but past that lup had this running idea that clementine kind of had this thing of "i have to be useful in some way" because of the world she came from, so lup did a lot to try and reaffirm that clem was part of the group and had done a lot for all of them. part of that was projecting, like, lup saying stuff she wanted to hear, but it was genuine in places too. clem had really started to be important to her and she'd made a lot of jokes to blanca about how clem was blanca's kid and sora was lup's and they were just like, 101 Dalmations-ing it? she was Angery at clementine doing the "take me instead" thing, even if she presented it as jokes. lup is a hypocrite with that too.
also as an aside, lup loved that she had pet name privileges. that's all she just really enjoyed being able to call clem baby or babydoll and not getting yelled at for it, wehehe
idk i think lup's ultimate feelings about clementine was like, i'm going to try to protect this girl without being too overbearing about it. she loves clementine a lot, she likes how sassy she is, she likes that clem stands up for herself and is an independent kid, but in that same vein she hopes that clem will maybe start to let her baby her a little more. lup is not EXACTLY a maternal figure but she does love a lot and freely, and clem did not escape this infliction.
also remind me to tag your cmo because i want them to go on adventures in no-zombie world.
