man. ori, where do i start with these shenanigans.
i feel like i'm going to say this with so many entries here, but alex is just... protective of kids by default. she's a big sister/surrogate mother, how could she not be? it's in her bones to be that way. even the ones she knows are competent enough and don't need her to protect them, she kinda does by default?
but respectfully. if she's just going to get in the way she'll try not to stamp all over them but... she will keep an eye out for them. and i feel like this how things went with kano? maybe less that he didn't need her looking out for him, because she didn't really know what he could or couldn't do because he kept everything so close to his chest. but also because he didn't want to talk about things -- any attempt to do so, or to show him any kind of casual affection just kind of... didn't work? alex is very touch centric, so that was a little weird for her. but she has her own hang ups and secrets and such, so she didn't want to push him.
she just... didn't want to stop talking to him because he didn't want to talk back? he obviously didn't mind being around people in some way, shape, or form because he sought her out for things like destroying the heck out of pinkie pie, or sitting next to her at the feast. even if he just wanted her food.
she sort of felt like she failed him, after the trial. she refused to vote for kano, because she didn't think it was right but... well. there were a couple of times where she felt she was a little voice in a storm when it came to what she was and wasn't able to do. she blamed herself for not pushing him to see if he was hiding more scalpels, but on the other hand she was kinda... i don't know if "proud" or "glad" is the right word? but the fact he handed over any at all seemed significant to her?
there's a lot she didn't understand about kano, but like. i sort of think she reacted to him in a similar way she did to rufus -- kano was someone she liked and, against a lot of common sense probably, he was someone she was fond of. the things he did tell her she tried to listen to, but she didn't want to push because... well. she has things that she doesn't want to share either. and then he talked about being seen as a monster and that hit her, in a way? she knows people who are treated like that when they're... y'know. not not dangerous, and have done bad things but the real reason they're feared is for something that they couldn't control or help... hearing that from someone else was hard. especially because she used to be guilty of being afraid of them without understanding them herself, so... she didn't want to give kano the feeling he was something to be feared, if she could.
she tried to send him messages too when i, becks, remembered but he never replied π well. apparently he did once but i got the message late. π kano her messages....
-- she definitely gave him that photo back. she would've kept it safe until he was able to take it back. (even immediately, even though that didn't get tagged.)
