Claude was so amusing to Chiron in some ways, because despite being relatively sneaky and cunning, some of his mannerisms reminded him so much of Achilles as a child when he was cheeky and eager to prove his worth. And in the most roundabout way, it actually made Chiron very soft on him--
Except for Chiron, being "soft" in this manner is more or less him smirking and going "prove your worth to me because I know you can do it." So he was soft but also a stubborn ass who messed with Claude in his own way, didn't give him much leeway in certain areas but then was very accommodating in others. And he was perfectly comfortable giving Claude an ear to listen to, even if Chiron would be the first to make it clear that you don't come to him for an asspat -- he's going to tell the truth as he sees it, and often times, the truth is cruel and unjust. That is how the world works in the end, especially when you mix in human nature.
But he also thought Claude was more or less capable of making it through the game in his own way, given all of their conversations. He remembered w0's dance where Claude alluded to his life back home, the politics he had to juggle, and then add to that all the memories he found out about. It painted Claude as someone who was used to overcoming really shitty odds, and Chiron did respect him for that.
Though it also had the doubled-edged sword of Chiron more or less leaving Claude to his own devices. Chiron did his part in the game but took on a very "I am doing this one thing while you others cover the rest" approach, and the fact that Claude even admitted he was a liar and a schemer meant Chiron did not prefer to tell him too much. He already had one schemer he was looking after and that took up so much of his energy, lord. So while Chiron respected Claude and would consider the other a student, he kept their relationship on what he believed to be his own terms -- friendly, and with him prepared to guide Claude as best he could, but for fear of information spreading around, at a slight arm's distance in terms of game info.
The only times he broke out of this was when Chiron grilled him about Raven's death, because then he was prepared to act as judge, jury, and executioner if things went array -- but also when he started to lose so many memories. Hard to be a teacher when you cannot remember that part of yourself! As it happened near the end of the game when I was feeling the burnout, there wasn't a lot of chance to explore the potential, but Chiron was most at ease with Claude in those moments bc he defaulted to HEAD EMPTY, HEART FULL, and felt as if his duties had more or less been concluded.
But overall, Chiron had a very positive view of Claude. Given that he still gets Achilles vibes from him, it's not a surprise to me that in his own way he grew very fond of him.
