BUCKY π BARNES π WOULD π DIE π FOR π OCHAKO
He stans this girl so much.
Honestly he was snotty to her for like a hot second when they first met because she was placing all this emphasis on like her powers and how they were needed for hero work? Or that's how he interpreted it anyway--but then she said something about needing to know how to fight even while powerless and immediately Bucky's heart grew twice as large and he was like ATTAGIRL
Basically every time he spoke with her and got to know her a little better, he liked her a little more. I think the moment he took her aside with the healing gun and really told her to consider the weight of her actions and if she could live with the consequences was the real point of no return. When Ochako wholeheartedly signed up for that responsibility--and was willing to actively learn how to gun better--that was basically the moment he went ride or die for her. Then when he saw her memshare of Bakugou, he went even MORE ride or die for her. That level of drive and determination? THAT is the shit he lives for--it's what's kept him going his entire life, and seeing it in Ochako was an absolute delight. She basically maxed out the respect meter, it is as high as it can possibly go for a 16 year old.
It's why he gave her the shield. He didn't want the shield to just go in the trash (and didn't know the dead could keep items), so he wanted to pass it on to someone who could make good use of it. Mostly he gave away all his things to his other Wolf teammates in a free-for-all, but wanted to give the shield away to someone specifically. Ochako was easily the best candidate--whether used as a weapon or a shield, he wanted it to go to someone who could make good use of it for the greater good. Ochako, with her drive and willingness to take on responsibility, was basically the only person he would want to give it to. Plus, the fact that she could understand its significance meant a lot too, that she could appreciate what he was giving her. He wanted her to use that shield to defend herself, defend others, whatever it took to keep her alive and fix whatever the fuck was going on.
...he was a little disappointed to find out that she volunteered for her death, rather than going down swinging, but as soon as he like got over that mental image that he had in mind he was still proud of her. Volunteering to die for the greater good is not an easy decision--and that she got to have her fun of throwing the ferris wheel while she was at it just tickles his feral side.
He does genuinely feel bad for what he put her through in that mini-cyoa at the end, though. For one thing, he would have wanted to tell Ochako about the Winter Soldier on his own terms, which alone he didn't really want to do. He gave Ochako such an image of his WW2 days with Cap and she was so into it that he...perhaps immaturely wanted to just not acknowledge the ugly things he did. It's not something he gets to do back home, so he kind of fell into the trap of "oh no, she doesn't know i'm a horrible person and now it's TOO LATE." And he certainly would never want her to experience even an iota of what that was like. He felt horrible that Ochako had to find out about it like this at all, and that it was so brutal and painful for her in the process. He didn't have any control over that, but it's still nasty traumatizing shit and it's his fault she was put through it.
He's grateful that Ochako is just sweeping it under the rug and at least from the outside is dealing with it just fine. That she's willing to let him visit her world and wants to go meet Cap herself in spite of all that absolutely touches his fucking heart.
Anyway you know that look on his face (see: icon) whenever Nat is kicking ass and wrecking shop? That's gonna be Bucky with Ochako, all the time. Will Smith handsing at her and yelling "THAT'S MY FRIEND!" to anyone who will listen.
