GRAVEYARD 2.0
GRAVEYARD Well, that sucked. But no matter what your death was like—whether it was something peaceful or traumatic, you'll find yourself waking in a completely white room on the floor. Small and empty, there isn't anything else there besides an open door to walk through. But before you do that, you'll probably notice that whatever injuries you may have had, including whatever may have been the death blow, are now gone. That's exciting. Stepping out of the room, it seems that you're in a large... house? with three different floors. Everything from floor, ceiling to furniture is completely white, except for the drawings that are plastered to the walls in each room. These are all colorful, drawn in colored pencils and crayon, and resemble a child's drawing. The other notable thing are the windows. While they're present all around the building, looking out of them only shows TV static. Besides that, everything is furnished with the absolute bare minimum of each room. The first floor is all typical common areas one would find in a house. There's a kitchen, living room area, laundry room, dining room, and a main hallway where the stairs are. There are also helpful drawings in these rooms that show the rooms much more lavishly decorated than they actually are. There's a door that appears to be the way to exit the building, it's locked. The second floor consists of nothing but twenty bedrooms. Each room has one queen sized bed, an empty dresser, and an attached bathroom with only a sink, toilet, and shower. Like the first floor, each bedroom has drawn pictures that show it looking much more lavish than it actually does. Thanks for nothing, artist! The third floor only has two rooms. One appears to be a home office with nothing but a desk and two chairs, one behind it and one in front of it. While there's blank pieces of paper and crayons on the desk, the note that was previously there is gone. The other room is much larger, and it's completely empty save for the many drawings lining its walls— in fact, the walls are covered in them, much more than in any other room. On closer inspection, though, it seems like these aren't actually drawings? The papers seem to be showing scenes from the living area. Everything from inside the hotel to the areas beyond the bridge are visible here. However, when curfew hits on Thursday nights, they revert to being normal drawings! Except for the fact that they're all drawings of stick figures being murdered in various ways. Well. At least there's plenty of things to draw with, if you get bored. Also, a handy link to the previous post. |

Vezda gets two files, both of which have several papers in them. 'Body Suitability' has paperwork starting in the 1940s in it, going through to 1965 at the most recent. It's a collection of first-hand reports on the attempt to create "the perfect vessel". There's literally years of genetic engineering and cloning in these files, as well as descriptions on the failures of each generation and what needs to be improved on. "fire resistance" and "accelerated regeneration to counteract possession-induced cell breakdown" are ones that pops up frequently.
The most recent page in the file is as follows:]
The most recent batches of clones have proven to be unsuccessful vessels. Most last only a few minutes before the cell breakdown makes them incompatible with life. Our current hypothesis is that they are not 'empty bodies' as previously theorized, and the presence of a human soul makes the cellular breakdown accelerate.
We have yet to devise a method of birth and child-rearing that ensures a human soul does not take residence in a clone body. For now, we will monitor our current raising processes within Section 13 and see which methods produce the most viable bodies. This will be revisited on 02/02/1967, where we will compare the methods and pick the most successful ones.
As for the current generations that are already too old for these double-blind studies, Lord Pheles has expressed a desire to make use of the resources we have. They will be moved over to the regeneration serum testing.

Either way, the files suddenly feel like a lead weight in his hands. ]
I don't like this. What is this place?
[ He flips through the files for more, for anything that could explain in greater detail what this place is for and why they're here seeing it.
Over his shoulder, to Mob: ]
You find anything over there?

The second file Vezda has details the attempts to create a 'regeneration serum' as an attempt to work around the problem of imperfect bodies breaking down under demonic possession. These tests, at least, are slightly less fatal than the possession tests. It seems the serum is in early stages of being developed, so they're testing it on minor injuries to see how quickly someone heals with the serum versus without.
Both files make reference to 'Sir Pheles' and 'Lucifer' several times. 'Sir Pheles' seems to be the one running the experiments, all in the name of creating a usable body for 'Lucifer'.]

[Are they his brothers, Mob? Well, he didn't read the other files.]
He has four.
[Bucky, you wanna see these concerning ass pictures? Mob will show them to him.]
no subject
I don't think those are his brothers, Shigeo.
[ He shows Mob his own files, namely the one discussing clones. There's no way it's a coincidence.
Vezda vaguely remembers Shiro telling him he was a test tube baby, so this...shouldn't be a surprise. And yet, coming face to face with such clinical notes about it? It still does. ]

The footsteps stop in the hall, and then there is the click of a door opening. Then the footsteps pick up again, and start to grow distant.]

[He's not. . . that focused on these horrible clone details. Instead, he'll head to the hallway to listen.]

[ He darts forward to grab Mob and hold him back, slapping a hand over his mouth to keep him silent. He might be a little rough, but, well--he has no idea who these people could be, and anyone who's just walking freely around a place full of records of clone experiments is just a little suspicious.
That said, he'll inch them both closer to the door to try and get a peek at what's going on, or at least hear something a little more clearly. ]

It's a child, to be exact. And they have opened the door labeled 'Rooms' and have gone down in that direction.
Both Mob and Vezda will get the sense that the child there might be familiar, especially after seeing the pictures in those files.]

If they follow the kid running away though, the hallway grows dark, and then suddenly isn't a hallway anymore? It's a room full of bunk beds, which are mostly filled with sleeping children. It's the same kids, all of whom look identical.
This kid doesn't go for the open bed, though. No, he dives down and wiggles his way under a nearby bed, eventually disappearing from sight entirely.
Mob and Vezda will need to act quickly, because the sound of heavy footsteps can be heard behind them.]

Stay fucking quiet, Mob. ]

Mob won't be able to see much more than their feet from where he is under the bed, but the way that the younger Shiro is sticking to the shadows and covering his mouth with his hands is a good sign that Mob should stay quiet too.
From Vezda's vantage point, he is out of sight but can see the three men. They stop by the bed with no child in it, and one crouches down to peer under it. Luckily that bed is not the bed Shiro and Mob are hiding under, so those two go unnoticed.
One of the other men standing up makes a 'tsk' sound before speaking.]
Did he run away again? That's the third time this month.
[The man crouching down is the next one to speak.]
It's fine. He can't get out of the facility anyway. Just put a lockdown on food supplies and we'll catch him when he gets hungry.
[The first man then speaks again.]
What about the experiment tonight?
[The crouched down man stands up.]
Get another one from his set. We'll have Shiro participate in the next study.
[And now they're moving over to another bed, this one with a sleeping boy in it. Both Vezda and Mob will get the sudden feeling of dread that, if they don't act, they will never see that sleeping boy again.
Do they stay hidden? Or do they intervene?]
no subject
But if Bucky doesn't move to try and do something about this, he's likely to come out before the boy is taken away.]
no subject
Sorry Mob. He's out of commission for the moment, he can't help. ]
no subject
But everything's going to become hazy again, the stale air of the sleeping room replaced by the bitter cold air of winter. Tile turns to snow, and Vezda and Mob are left knee-deep in it.
Shiro is there too, and he looks a little older. Still not quite an adult yet, he's maybe 12 or so. But he's older, and he's actually responding to the two.]
Keep up, or I'm leaving you behind.
[Time to run. Literally, too, because the bark of dogs can be heard from somewhere behind them.]
