The total nova count for each team is a cumulation of everything you collected--from the things like the scavenger hunt, to voting. Even the... um, trip that you had with the others the other day also got you nova.

There really are a lot more ways to get nova than just that though. Even with voting, the multiple options gives you more nova based on how much you got correct. So while m-murder is a way to gain nova, I think people may be too focused on how much weight it holds compared to other ways to get it.
